Izmir has earned its place in history as one of the most critical strongholds of resistance on the path to the founding of the Republic of Turkey. The Great Offensive, initiated by the Turkish Army on August 26, 1922, marked the final phase of the War of Independence and concluded with victory. Commander-in-Chief Mustafa Kemal Pasha’s historic order on August 30—"Armies, your first target is the Mediterranean. Forward!"—became a turning point in Izmir’s liberation and the independence struggle.
